Scientists usually measure an animal’s bite force in Newtons (N) or convert it into kilograms or pounds of pressure. That is more than three times as powerful as today's saltwater crocodile. Against a T. Rex, even an off-road SUV would have been nothing more than a flimsy tin can.
The Strongest Bite in Earth's History
If you thought T. Rex was the ultimate record holder, you haven't accounted for the Megalodon (Otodus megalodon)! This prehistoric giant shark ruled the oceans millions of years ago. Scientists discovered that Megalodon possessed an unimaginable bite force of up to 182,000 Newtons (approx. 18.2 tons of pressure)! That is more than three times stronger than T. Rex and about ten times stronger than today's Great White Shark.
Highest Bite Force Relative to Body Weight
If you only look at the pure Newton rating, the Tasmanian Devil doesn't make the top 10 - it "only" bites down with 400 to 550 Newtons. However, when scaled relative to its body mass, no other living carnivorous mammal on Earth bites harder than the Tasmanian Devil. Weighing a mere 13-26 pounds (6-12 kg), it can bite down with 88-110 pounds (40-50 kg) of pressure. It holds the highest Bite Force Quotient (BFQ) at 181. By comparison, Megalodon sits at just 2.3!
