Main Characteristics of Ants
- There are more than 14,000 species of ants. In fact, it could be as many as 20,000 to 30,000.
- In the USA, there are approximately 800 species. In all of Europe, there are around 600 species. In Germany, there are only about 110 species.
- Ants have a head, mouthparts, two antennae, a thorax, an abdomen and six legs.
- Ants are omnivores. They milk aphids, sip nectar, and enjoy slurping on fruits. They also consume carrion, which includes dead insects and small vertebrates. Additionally, they feed on sweets, juices, soda, pet food, and leftover meat.
- Ants live in large colonies. Researchers estimate that there are 20 quadrillion ants on Earth. That's 20,000,000,000,000,000. For every single person, there are 2.5 million ants.
- The largest continuous colony in the world is made up of Argentine ants and spans 3,700 miles (6,000 km): from Northern Italy through Southern France to the Spanish Atlantic coast.
- The tasks within the colony are clearly assigned – much like in a bee community. There are queens, workers, and soldiers (for defense). The males fertilize the queen's eggs.
- Ants are highly social creatures. They save the lives of injured companions, maintain a shared immune system through the exchange of saliva, and collaboratively create structures with their bodies to move from one branch or rock to another.
- Ants play a crucial role in nature. They aerate the forest soil, enrich it with nutrients, and help spread plant seeds. Additionally, they consume dead animals, which helps prevent the spread of diseases. They even pollinate cocoa plants and heal injured trees.
- The ant is the strongest animal in the world. It can carry 40 to 50 times its own weight.
- Ants are among the few animals that use tools. They construct stairs out of sand.
- Three species of ants are considered dangerous: the red fire ant (found in America, Australia, Asia, and Europe), the bulldog ant (native to Australia), and the bullet or 24-hour ant (located in America). Their bites can cause intense pain and allergic reactions.
- There are ants that explode to protect their colony. This species is called Colobopsis explodens. They squeeze their abdomen until it bursts, releasing a sticky, toxic liquid. They also die in the process.
- The largest ant is a driver ant, known as Dorylus fulvus. It can grow up to 2 inches (5 cm) in length.
