You might have seen them in cartoons and video games: huge creepy spiders that spit sticky nets. In reality, only one spider can do that: the spitting spider.

Its web silk isn’t just sticky but also poisonous and can pin prey down on the ground: in less than one 700th of a second, this spider spits up to 20 times at its victim in a zig-zag pattern until it’s stuck to the ground. But they can’t be too far away from their future snack, as they can only spit 0.7 inches (20 mm).
