As Intelligent as a Five Year Old Child
They say that the grey parrot has the intelligence of a five year old child. One parrot became especially famous: Alex (1976 - 2007). He was able to tell the difference between 50 objects, up to five shapes and up to seven colors. He was also able to compare objects and work out if they were bigger, smaller, similar or different.
Grey Parrots’ Language Skills
Alex was also able to say 150 words. But he didn’t just say them at random. He could actually communicate. If he didn’t want to train anymore, he would say “wanna go back”. If his trainer was fed up or disappointed, he’d say “I’m sorry”. Even if Alex was an exceptional example of his species, many grey parrots are similarly intelligent.
