About Famous Dogs and Their Names

Movie Dogs Beginning With L

• Lassie – the clever long-haired collie

Lassie is still the most famous dog in the world. The dog was the star of a TV show and saved her little masters Jeff and Timmy from danger. In later episodes, Ranger Corey Stuart stood by her side whenever help was needed. Lassie is a word from the Scottish dialect meaning “girl”.

• Laika – the first life form in space

Laika wasn’t just the first four-legged astronaut, but the first ever life form sent into space. In 1957, this dog was sent around the world in a Russian spacecraft. Unfortunately, the technology wasn’t advanced enough back then to bring the dog back. The capsule also overheated unexpectedly so Laika actually died after just four days. If you have a dog with an extraordinary sense of curiosity that loves to explore unexpected places, Laika could be a fitting name - as a memorial to the dog in space and out of respect for her heroic journey.

Life Savers Beginning With L

• Lefty – would give her life for her master

Lefty is a truly heroic Pitbull. As four burglars threatened her family in Virginia (USA) in 2013, she tried to chase them away. She managed to do it as well, but was shot and had to have a leg amputated. The family couldn’t pay for the operation, but they managed to raise the money from donations. Lefty is now fine and is enjoying life on three legs just as much.

• Louie – pressed the panic button

Yorkshire Terrier Louie knows what to do in an emergency. He was trained to press a panic button when his owner Judith Shaw from Wrexham (UK) got ill. When his master couldn’t breathe and fainted, he used his mini paws to press the button to automatically call a paramedic. He saved her life. Small dog, big heart!

• Lola – helps her deaf master hear

It’s always incredible how much love an animal can show even if they have been mistreated or neglected. Mongrel Lola is one of these animals, who happily found Charlene. As her master is deaf, Lola helps her through the day: she tells her when the egg timer goes off, the phone rings or someone knocks at the door. All sounds that Charlene can’t hear but Lola can. Lola also comforts and cheers her master up, as being deaf can be very sad sometimes.

Mythological Dogs Beginning With L

• Lailaps – the immortal dog

In Ancient Greece, in the city of Thebes, there was a man-eating fox on the loose. The locals didn’t know what to do apart from sacrificing one child a month. They thought it would placate the fox. They believed that they had no other choice, as nobody could catch the fox. Lailaps the dog, originally a wedding present from Zeus, head of the gods, to his wife Europa, was eventually set on the fox. He was immortal and it was said that he could catch any wild animal. It quickly became obvious that the hunt would last forever - literally. Zeus got fed up at some point and turned both animals into stone. If your dog is “forever” chasing things or has to run after every frisbee, maybe Lailaps could be a fitting name.
