About Famous Dogs and Their Names

Movie and Cartoon Dogs Beginning With P

• Pal – played Lassie

This Border Collie was one of the first “actors” to play Lassie, the famous movie dog. She had an exciting life as a Hollywood star and obviously seemed to like it. Pal lived to be an impressive 18 years old. Not many dogs live that long.

• Pluto – the klutz

Goofy from Micky Mouse is known for his clumsiness. But he’s not the only dog in the club, as there’s Pluto as well. He’s Micky’s four-legged friend and one of the few characters that doesn’t speak. But he does bark and growl. Pluto isn’t exactly the cleverest dog and gets himself into embarrassing but hilarious pickles a lot. But he’s still a very friendly dog that is absolutely loyal to his master.

• Mr. Peabody - the talking dog

In the movie “The Adventures of Mr Peabody and Sherman”, little Sherman doesn’t have it easy: his adoptive father Mr Peabody is super intelligent and inventive, but he’s also a dog! Although Sherman’s classmates make fun of him, the two have incredible adventures through the centuries. Mr Peabody looks like a Beagle.

Record Breakers Beginning With P

• Puggy – has the longest tongue

Pekinese Puggy currently holds the Guinness World Record (2009) for the dog with the longest tongue at 4.5 inch (11.43 cm). That’s longer than the average human tongue, which is only around 9cm long. But remember that humans grow to 5.2 to 26.2 feet (1.6 to 1.8 meters) tall. This dog breed only has a shoulder height of 5.9 to 9 inch (15 to 23 cm). In comparison, a human tongue would have to be almost 6.5 feet (2 meters) (taking away the head height because of the shoulder height measurement). Boxer Brandy was the previous record holder (2002). He had a tongue measuring 16.9 inch (43 cm) long. And no, that’s not a typo!

• Pusuke – lived to 26 years old

Pusuke was the oldest dog in the world for a long time. The Shiba-Inu cross was born in 1985 and lived until 2011. He was 26 years old. The current record holders are vegetarian (!) dog Bramble, who died at 27, and Australian Shepherd Bluey who lived to 29 years old.

Life Savers Beginning With P

• Psycho – saved a little girl

In 2013, a dog with a slightly unfortunate name saved the life of a little girl. The Chihuahua Poodle cross weighed 11 lb (5 kg) and could easily fit into a handbag. Although he’s so small, he showed great courage when a rattlesnake surprised little Martha Rodriguez in Texas, USA. Before it could bite, Psycho jumped between the two. Unfortunately, the snake struck Psycho’s eye. However, the vet was able to save it.

Famous dogs beginning with P

• Peritas – belonged to Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great was the King of Macedonia in 336-323 BC. He was famous for his campaigns and conquering of foreign cities and countries. His horse Bukephalos and his dog Peritas were his loyal companions for many years. Alexander even named a city after Peritas. It’s not completely certain but Peritas may have been a Molosser, Greyhound or Bulldog.
