Main Characteristics
The Great White Shark is the largest predatory fish on our planet. It possesses the strongest bite force of all animals. Its most distinctive feature is its body shape: it resembles a torpedo – complete with countless sharp teeth! Although portrayed as a terrifying killer in movies, it does not actively hunt humans. Fatal bites are usually just curious "test bites." More people worldwide die from falling coconuts, tipping vending machines, or while attempting to take a spectacular selfie.
Distribution and Habitat
Large Great White Sharks can be found globally in nearly all oceans, particularly in coastal, temperate, and subtropical waters. They are especially prevalent along the shores of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, California, and certain regions of the Mediterranean. These sharks inhabit both shallow coastal areas—often frequented by seals—and the open ocean.
Lifestyle
Great White Sharks typically roam the open sea as solitary creatures. They travel long distances and migrate thousands of kilometers each year in search of food or for breeding purposes. At prime feeding locations (such as near seal colonies), multiple sharks may gather. In these areas, a clear hierarchy exists: larger and older sharks take precedence when it comes to feeding.
Anatomy and Appearance
Size and Weight
Male sharks typically measure between 11-16 feet (3.5-4 meters) in length, while females can reach 14-16 feet (4.5-5 m). Their weight can be as much as 2 tons – roughly equivalent to the weight of a full-sized SUV!
Rough "Toothy" Skin
The skin of the Great White Shark appears smooth but feels quite rough - like sandpaper! It is made up of millions of tiny dermal teeth that reduce water turbulence, allowing the shark to glide swiftly and silently through the water.
The Revolver Tooth Structure
The Great White Shark possesses triangular, serrated teeth that can grow up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) long and are arranged in multiple rows. When one tooth falls out, a new one takes its place - similar to the bullets in an old revolver's chamber. This process is quite rapid: it occurs within 24-48 hours! The shark has around 50 "active" teeth, but always maintains at least 300 teeth that are essentially "on standby." Over its lifetime, a Great White Shark can use up to 30,000 teeth.
No Swim Bladder
Like all sharks, the Great White Shark lacks a swim bladder. When it stops swimming, it sinks to the ocean floor.
But a Gigantic Liver
The liver of a Great White Shark constitutes 25-30% of its total body weight and can weigh between 660-990 pounds (300-450 kg). It acts as a buoyancy aid since oil is about six times lighter than water. Additionally, the liver serves as a handy "extra tank" that stores the energy needed for long migrations.
Why Is the Belly White?
Despite its name, only the belly is brilliantly white. The back is a dark gray color. This color difference is known as countershading: When a prey animal looks down into the dark ocean, the shark blends in with the seabed. Conversely, when it looks up, the shark's white belly disappears against the bright sunlight filtering through the water's surface.
Diet
The Great White Shark is a carnivore. Its diet changes as it matures. Young sharks primarily feed on smaller fish, rays, and squid. Adult sharks prefer food that is high in fat and energy, especially seals, sea lions, and elephant seals. They also do not shy away from carrion, such as the carcass of a dead whale.

Hunting Method
Great White Sharks typically hunt by ambush. They swim beneath their prey, observe it, and then launch a rapid attack from below.
Breaching
Off the coast of South Africa, sharks can launch themselves upward at such high speeds during seal hunts that they completely leap out of the water. This is known as "breaching" (breaking through the water's surface).
Spy-Hopping
Occasionally, they will hold their heads vertically out of the water to survey their surroundings at the surface with their eyes, much like whales do.
How Dangerous Are Great White Sharks?
Dangerous Test Bites
Every year, there are fatal encounters with Great White Sharks. However, these are not intentional attacks. A Great White Shark has no hands or fingers to explore unfamiliar objects. Instead, it performs what are known as "test bites" to determine what it is dealing with. Since humans do not have a thick, tasty layer of fat like seals, the shark usually lets go immediately. Unfortunately, a test bite can be so powerful that it may still result in fatalities.
The Real Danger
Globally, 2-6 people die each year from test bites by Great White Sharks. However, the likelihood of being struck by lightning is significantly higher. The same goes for the risk of dying from a fall out of bed or being crushed by a tipping snack machine.
While snorkeling, I once saw a small, young lemon shark. It was harmless, but wow, my heart was racing! I’m not sure if I want to encounter a Great White Shark.

Strongest Bite Force
The Great White Shark has the strongest bite force of all animals in the world. It can exert a force of 18,000 Newtons - in comparison, a human's bite force ranges from 200-400 Newtons. Newton is the scientific unit of force; for instance, 10 Newtons is roughly equivalent to the weight of 2.25 pounds (1 kg). This means the Great White Shark's bite force is equivalent to 4,000 pounds (1,800 kg). Only the Tyrannosaurus Rex 5.7 tons (57,000 Newtons) and the Megalodon 182 tons (182,000 Newtons) had a stronger bite.
Senses
The Great White Shark possesses exceptional senses:
- Sense of Smell: It can detect a single drop of blood in millions of liters of water.
- Sense of Sight: Even in murky underwater conditions, it has excellent vision.
- Sense of Hearing: It can hear exceptionally well over long distances.
- Electro-Sense: Fine sensory organs known as (Ampullae of Lorenzini) located in its nose allow it to detect minute electrical fields - such as the heartbeat of a fish buried in the sand.
Half Cold-Blooded, Half Warm-Blooded
Most fish are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature depends on their environment. However, the Great White Shark is different. It is partially warm-blooded. It can keep its swimming muscles and internal organs warm through special blood vessels. This adaptation allows it to swim quickly and agilely even in cooler ocean waters.
How Do Great White Sharks Sleep?
Great White Sharks need oxygen to breathe. However, they can only get fresh water into their gills while swimming, as they lack the respiratory muscles that humans have. Therefore, they can never stop moving. But how do they sleep? They shut down one half of their brain! The other half remains active, enabling them to continue swimming.
They Swim Up to 6,800 miles
Great White Sharks cover enormous distances. In 2004, researchers equipped a female shark named Nicole with a tracker. She swam approximately 6,800 miles (11,000 km) from South Africa to Australia in just 99 days. Her tracker was designed to detach, but she was recognized back in South Africa less than 9 months later – identifiable by a unique notch in her dorsal fin. In total, she swam over 20,000 km. The longest continuous migration was achieved by Alisha, another female Great White Shark, who swam 23,100 miles (37,178 km) over four years.
They Dive Up to 4,146 Feet Deep
Great White Sharks frequently dive to great depths. Records show that they have reached depths of up to 4,146 feet (1,264 meters).
Life Expectancy
Researchers previously estimated the lifespan of great white sharks to be around 20-30 years. Today, it is known that they can live between 30-70 years in the wild.
Enemies and Threats
Natural Enemies
Orcas are the only natural predators of the great white shark. They hunt in groups to access its nutrient-rich liver.
Humans
The greatest threat comes from humans. Due to overfishing, entanglement in gillnets (bycatch), targeted fin hunting, and ocean pollution, shark populations are declining worldwide. Since great white sharks primarily inhabit open waters, estimating their numbers is challenging. Nevertheless, the species is classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN.
Importance to the Ecosystem
The great white shark is a top predator, positioned at the top of the food chain. It maintains the biological balance in the ocean by preying on sick or weak animals, preventing overpopulation of certain species (like seals).
Reproduction
Surprisingly Late Maturity
White sharks take their time. The male sharks reach sexual maturity at around 26 years, while the females do so even later, at about 33 years.
Live Birth
Out of 36,500 fish species, 98% lay eggs. The White Shark is among the few species where the eggs develop inside the mother. The baby sharks initially feed on the yolk and later on unfertilized eggs within the womb. Occasionally, the largest and strongest babies may consume weaker and underdeveloped siblings.
Long Gestation Period
The gestation period for White Sharks is notably lengthy: it lasts 12-18 months. Only five other fish species have a longer gestation period, all of which are also sharks.
Few Offspring
White Sharks give birth to only 2-12 young ones. This is quite low compared to other fish. The newborns are already 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 meters) long at birth and are immediately independent.
